Chapter 2

“You made it,” I said to Colt later that evening after he stopped by the sofa where I was sitting to give me a quick peck on the lips before heading over to the coat rack where he left his coat, hat, gloves, and gun belt.

“I actually meant to get here earlier, but I got another call about lights in the lighthouse just as I was leaving the station.”

I raised a brow and glanced in his direction. “Lighthouse?”

“The abandoned lighthouse about two miles south of here out on the point.”

“I thought it was closed for renovation.”

“It is, but I’ve had calls the last two evenings from folks in the area who swear they see lights coming from inside the structure. I’ve checked it out and haven’t found a thing, but I figured I’d go by and recheck the locks.”

“And?”

“And the locks are fine. I will admit that the locks are the sort that would be easy for someone to bypass should the lights be real and not simply a mirage, but I didn’t see anything that would indicate anyone had been messing around up there. I guess if I continue to get calls, I’ll have to look into it further.” He took a deep breath. “What smells so good?”

“Salmon. It’s warming in the oven. Georgia made rice, asparagus, rosemary bread, and cobbler to go with it.”

“That sounds perfect. I never did get lunch, and I’m starving.”

“If you want to change out of your uniform, I’ll grab the food. Do you want beer or wine?”

“A beer would be great.”

I could hear Colt washing up in the next room while I set the table. He had his own place and did stay there at times, but it seemed as of late that he spent most nights with me here in the cottage I shared with Georgia.

“Meow.” I looked down to see my Maine Coon, Rufus, staring at the fish I’d just taken out of the oven.

“This is people fish and not cat fish. It has spices you probably shouldn’t have, or I’d give you a bite. If you let Colt and me eat in peace and quiet, I’ll open a can of tuna and splt it between you and the dogs after we’re done.”

Rufus must have agreed with my plan since he whipped his tail from left to right a few times and then headed over to the sofa for a pre-treat nap.

Once I’d served the food and Colt and I settled in to eat, I asked about his day.

“Things were quiet in town with the exception of snow-related incidents today. Even those have been minimal, which I appreciate.”

I took a sip of my wine and then set my glass aside. “There are advantages to be had during the off-season. I drove through town a few days ago, and it looked like a ghost town.”

“That’s the way it’s been. I guess it’s nice that everyone is getting a break after the holidays. I think that the merchants are enjoying the lull.”

“I agree.
